India’s employment landscape shows signs of recovery as July job postings increase, led by healthcare roles, though tech hiring remains sluggish amidst AI-driven sector shifts.
India’s formal job market picked up in July, with job postings on Indeed rising 1.2% after three months of declines. The recovery was broader than a single sector, with postings increasing across nearly 80% of occupations over the past three months, according to the company’s latest data. Even so, the pattern remains uneven, with healthcare and care roles strengthening while technology continues to lag. Job postings were also 8.3% higher than a year earlier and stood 84% above pre-pandemic levels, showing that hiring demand remains well above the levels seen before Covid.
Healthcare led the rebound. Indeed said medical technician roles recorded the sharpest rise, up 30%, while childcare, physicians and surgeons, and therapy jobs each rose by about a quarter over the same period. Callam Pickering, senior economist for Indeed APAC, said the improvement was gradual but still notable because postings remain elevated by historical standards and continue to outperform many other labour markets tracked by the platform.
By contrast, technology hiring remains under pressure. Over the past three months, postings fell 24% for IT infrastructure, operations and support, 18% for software development, 14% for data and analytics, and 11% for IT systems and solutions. That slowdown underlines the split in India’s job market, where demand in essential services has held up better than in some parts of the digital economy.
Indeed also said artificial intelligence is increasingly reshaping job descriptions beyond specialist tech roles. In the March 2026 quarter, around 6.6% of titles tracked in India included meaningful AI references, roughly double the share a year earlier and nearly four times the level two years ago. Non-tech jobs made up 42% of AI-related titles, up from 39% a year earlier and 29% two years ago, suggesting AI skills are moving from a niche requirement to a wider workplace expectation.
