Indian stock markets gained on Tuesday, buoyed by falling crude oil prices and positive signals from Iran and Oman over a potential temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, offering some relief to India’s external vulnerabilities.
Indian shares ended higher on Tuesday as a sharp fall in crude oil prices lifted sentiment, with investors encouraged by signs that Iran and Oman may be moving towards a temporary arrangement to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 both recovered late in the session after spending much of the day lagging global peers, as Brent crude slipped below $87 a barrel and reduced pressure on one of India’s biggest external risks.
Market reports from India Today and Business Recorder said the gains were tied to renewed talks involving Tehran and Muscat over a phased corridor for civilian shipping, alongside plans to clear mines from the waterway’s western approaches. That prospect helped ease fears of supply disruption in a passage that the US Energy Information Administration says carried about 21 million barrels a day in 2022, roughly a fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption.
The oil move also mattered for domestic equities because India imports most of its crude. Lower prices tend to improve the trade balance, ease pressure on the rupee and support fuel-sensitive companies, especially state-run oil marketers and refiners. Tuesday’s advance was therefore broadening beyond energy names, with financial stocks also firmer as investors weighed the possibility of some relief for inflation and monetary policy.
Still, the outlook remains fragile. Iranian officials have indicated that any corridor would be temporary and contingent on wider political conditions, while the mine-clearing effort could take time. Even so, for Indian markets, the session marked a rare moment when the country’s largest external vulnerability looked slightly less severe.
