Rupee remains resilient as RBI intervenes amid rising oil prices and bond yields

The Indian rupee edged lower on Tuesday amid rising global oil prices and bond yields, but RBI’s intervention helped stabilise the currency despite external pressures and increased financial strain.

The Indian rupee edged lower on Tuesday as higher oil prices and firmer global bond yields kept the currency under pressure, with traders saying the Reserve Bank of India likely stepped in to limit losses. The rupee ended at 95.68 per dollar, compared with 95.6025 in the previous session, and held up better than several regional peers that also faced risk-off sentiment. The Philippine peso fell 0.5% and the Indonesian rupiah lost 0.2%, underscoring how exposed energy-importing currencies remain when crude rises.

Market participants said the central bank’s presence was visible across segments, helping anchor the rupee even as external conditions turned less favourable. CRISIL has said elevated crude prices have fed into tighter financial conditions in India through higher government security yields, while rising US Treasury yields and foreign investor outflows have added to the strain. In its June note, the agency said the benchmark 10-year government security yield rose to 6.96% in April and could average 7.0% by March 2027 if crude prices, fiscal pressure and volatile capital flows persist.

The backdrop matters because India is one of the Asian economies most sensitive to energy shocks, given its large oil import bill. CRISIL also noted in May that West Asia tensions and higher crude had already lifted domestic borrowing costs, even before global rates and portfolio flows turned more uncertain. For now, the rupee’s move suggests the RBI is still willing to smooth volatility, but the currency remains vulnerable if oil stays elevated and bond yields keep climbing.
