Post office small savings schemes such as PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme can now be transferred to banks seamlessly, enhancing convenience for savers and enabling digital access without account closure.
Post office small savings account holders can now move key schemes such as the Public Provident Fund, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana and the Senior Citizens’ Savings Scheme to a bank without closing the account, according to InformalNewz. The change is likely to appeal to savers who want easier digital access, broader banking services and fewer trips to the post office, while keeping the original account’s continuity intact.
According to Mint, a PPF account can be shifted between authorised banks and post offices without interrupting the account’s tenure or affecting the accumulated balance. The same basic transfer route also applies to SCSS and SSY accounts, Financial Express reported, allowing customers to move between the postal system and a bank while retaining the scheme rather than opening a fresh investment elsewhere.
The process starts at the branch where the account is currently held. The account holder must submit a transfer request, provide the destination branch’s full address and hand over the passbook and KYC documents, including Aadhaar and PAN, where required. The existing branch then forwards the balance and documents to the new bank, Moneycontrol reported in its guide to SSY transfers. At the receiving branch, the customer is typically asked to complete fresh opening and identification formalities before the account is reactivated and a new passbook is issued.
InformalNewz says the transfer charge is ₹100 plus GST. A separate Financial Express report said the fee for SSY transfers was ₹100 and noted that the move can be done only once in a year. Mint also makes clear that a PPF account cannot be transferred to another person, since ownership cannot be changed under the scheme rules.
