Hindustan Copper charts ₹7,000 crore expansion to lead India’s critical minerals push

State-owned Hindustan Copper unveils a ₹7,000 crore capital plan over the next five to six years, aiming to expand mining capacity, revive assets, and advance its role in India’s green energy transition through investments in exploration, technology, and strategic partnerships.

State-owned Hindustan Copper is preparing a capital spending programme of more than ₹7,000 crore over the next five to six years as it steps up efforts to expand mining capacity, revive dormant assets and widen its reach in critical minerals, the company said in a regulatory filing.

The plan comes at a time when copper demand in India is being lifted by infrastructure spending, renewable energy projects, electric vehicles and other clean-energy uses. Hindustan Copper said it has added 135.52 million tonnes of copper ore reserves and resources over the past three years, strengthening the backdrop for its expansion drive. Business Standard reported that the company sees the spending as part of a broader push into exploration, mine reopening and strategic partnerships.

According to Economic Times, the company’s investment plans also include a digital overhaul of its operations, with upgrades to communications systems and the introduction of technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence. Hindustan Copper has also said it is well placed to move into critical minerals, a segment that the company believes can support India’s green energy transition and reduce import dependence.

The miner has already been building partnerships to support that strategy. It recently announced cooperation with Chile’s state-owned Codelco on capacity building, knowledge sharing and technical work in mining, beneficiation and exploration. Domestically, it has signed memoranda of understanding with public sector firms including RITES, Indian Oil, Coal India, Oil India and GAIL to expand its mining footprint and strengthen mineral security. Hindustan Copper said it is the country’s only vertically integrated producer of refined copper, with operations ranging from mining and beneficiation to smelting, refining and copper rod production. The company said its reserves and resources stand at 767.37 million tonnes, while its market capitalisation was ₹51,619 crore.
