Faridabad cybercrime exposes bizarre scam promising crore for old five-rupee note

A Faridabad man was lured into a scam promising ₹1 crore for his old five-rupee note, leading police to arrest a suspect and intensify warnings against social media financial frauds.

A cybercrime case in Faridabad has exposed a bizarre fraud in which a man was allegedly lured with the promise of ₹1 crore for an old five-rupee note. Police said the scam began after the victim, a resident of Sector 8, spotted a Facebook advertisement claiming that old notes and coins could fetch huge sums from a buyer linked to a currency exchange company.

According to police, the fraudsters persuaded him that his old five-rupee note would be purchased for about ₹1 crore. Once they had his confidence, they asked him to send money for a series of purported charges, including tax, security, customs and other fees. The victim transferred a total of ₹1,02,267 before realising that the promised payment would never arrive.

Investigators traced part of the money trail to Vinod, a resident of Deeng in Sirsa district, and arrested him. He was produced before a court, which granted police three days to question him further. Officers are now trying to identify other members of the alleged gang and determine how the stolen funds were moved through different accounts.

Police said Vinod had received ₹28,000 from the disputed transfers, but his precise role in the wider network remains under investigation. They also said he has studied up to Class 8 and works as a security guard. The inquiry is focused on how his account was used and whether he knowingly helped launder the proceeds.

The case has prompted renewed warnings about social media advertisements that promise extraordinary returns for old notes and coins. Police said scammers often begin with an eye-catching offer and then demand extra payments under labels such as registration, GST, customs or verification charges. They have urged people not to transfer money to unknown accounts and to report suspected cyber fraud immediately.
