Indian IT stocks face renewed decline amid AI worries and global demand concerns

The Nifty IT index and major tech giants like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCL Technologies faced further pressure as investors reassessed growth prospects amidst fears of AI-led disruption and softer global tech demand, extending a six-day losing streak.

Indian information technology shares came under fresh pressure on Tuesday, with the Nifty IT index slipping in early trade as investors continued to reassess the sector’s growth outlook. Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and HCL Technologies all traded lower, while the broader market also opened weak, adding to a run of recent losses as sentiment remained fragile.

NDTV Profit reported that the selling came as concerns over generative artificial intelligence, elevated valuations and a cautious backdrop for global technology spending weighed on the group. The weakness also coincided with weekly derivatives expiry, a session that often brings sharper swings. Across the market, the NSE Nifty 50 and the BSE Sensex both opened in the red, extending a sixth straight day of declines.

The sector’s latest slide follows a longer period of strain. LiveMint reported that Indian IT stocks have already faced a deep sell-off at times this year, with the Nifty IT index falling sharply as investors worried about AI-led disruption and weaker global tech demand. In previous sessions, analysts have pointed to subdued corporate spending and softer revenue outlooks at major overseas technology firms as key reasons for the pressure.

The pattern has been clear in recent quarters: when earnings or guidance miss expectations, IT counters can fall hard. Financial Express reported that weak quarterly results and softer revenue projections had earlier dragged the index lower, while Business Standard said the sector was hit after disappointing results from large players. More recently, Moneycontrol said the Nifty IT pack remained the market’s weakest sector as fears deepened that more capable AI tools could accelerate disruption to IT services models.
