India’s electric vehicle exports soared in the April-June quarter of FY2026-27, reaching $369 million, driven primarily by European markets and driven by major automakers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra, signalling a significant shift in the country’s position in global electric mobility.
India’s electric vehicle exports accelerated sharply in the April-June quarter of FY2026-27, with Department of Commerce data showing export earnings from electric motor cars rising to $369 million from $22.2 million a year earlier. Shipments also climbed steeply, with 10,802 electric cars sent overseas during the quarter, up from 1,309 units in the same period of FY2025-26. The figures suggest that India is moving from a niche exporter of EVs to a more established participant in the global electric mobility market.
Europe was the main engine of that growth. Organiser reported that the region accounted for the largest share of India’s electric-car exports, reinforcing the role of advanced markets in absorbing made-in-India vehicles. That pattern fits with broader trade data showing Indian vehicles gaining ground in Europe ahead of a possible India-EU trade agreement, while industry reports have also pointed to the growing importance of the UK, Germany, Spain and Norway as destinations for Indian-made cars.
The surge in the latest quarter builds on a strong full year. India’s annual electric-car exports rose eightfold to $701 million in FY2025-26 from $77.9 million in the previous year, according to the figures cited in the report. The broader motor-vehicle export sector also expanded in the quarter, rising 15 per cent to $2.87 billion, underlining that electric mobility is becoming a more visible part of India’s overall automobile trade.
The export map is widening well beyond Europe. Japan bought $13.4 million of Indian EVs in the quarter, while Nepal took in $8.1 million. Shipments also reached Israel, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and several Latin American markets, including Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Costa Rica. Separate reporting by The Economic Times and other outlets said Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are helping drive the momentum, with Maruti’s e-Vitara marking a notable entry into export markets and broadening the geographic reach of India’s EV industry.
