Indian fuel prices remain stable despite global oil gains amid Middle East tensions

Petrol and diesel prices across India largely unchanged on 18 August, even as crude oil rises on Middle East worries, highlighting the country’s fixed pricing structure amid global volatility.

Fuel prices across India were broadly unchanged on 18 August, even as crude oil climbed on worries that tensions in the Middle East could worsen. Livemint reported that petrol and diesel rates held steady in most states, with only small moves in a few markets, after global benchmark prices rose on Monday.

In the major cities listed by Livemint, petrol in New Delhi stood at ₹102.12 a litre and diesel at ₹95.20. Mumbai had some of the highest rates among the metros at ₹111.21 for petrol and ₹97.83 for diesel, while Chennai recorded ₹107.76 and ₹99.55 respectively. Kolkata was quoted at ₹113.51 for petrol and ₹99.82 for diesel. Rates in Bengaluru were ₹111.68 for petrol and ₹99.56 for diesel, according to the same report.

The newspaper said Indian retail fuel prices are set by state-run oil marketing companies, which helps limit the direct pass-through from swings in international crude markets. That structure means local prices can differ sharply from city to city because of taxes and other state-level charges. Earlier reports by Hindustan Times, The Hans India, Financial Express, India Infoline, Newsd.in and Current Trends News also described largely stable fuel prices on 18 August in previous years, underscoring how Indian pump prices can remain unchanged even when global conditions are volatile.
