Kerala banks to remain open during Onam holidays despite conflicting calendars

Despite a series of holidays around the Onam festival, banks in Kerala are set to stay open from August 25 to 28, with digital banking services likely unaffected, though branch operations may face delays.

Banks in Kerala will not be shut continuously from August 25 to 28 for Onam, despite a cluster of holidays around the festival period, according to holiday calendars and bank closure lists for 2026. The state’s main celebration, Thiruvonam, falls on Wednesday, August 26, while the Reserve Bank of India-linked bank holiday schedule and the Kerala government’s public holiday notification do not match exactly on every date.

The Kerala government’s 2026 holiday calendar lists First Onam on August 25 and Thiruvonam on August 26. It also marks August 28 as a public holiday for Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi and Ayyankali Jayanthi. By contrast, bank holiday listings for Kerala show closures on August 25 for Eid-e-Milad and on August 27 for Thiruvonam, which means branch access may vary from day to day rather than follow a single uninterrupted stretch.

Other holiday trackers, including Moneycontrol, Keka, Indian HRM, Code for Banks and BankBazaar, also place the Onam period at the centre of Kerala’s August schedule and note the usual second- and fourth-Saturday closures that apply to scheduled banks through the year. Even so, digital services are expected to keep working during the holiday period. Customers should be able to use UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs, although cheque clearing, cash handling and other branch-based services may be delayed.
