Experts recommend immediate action to block, inform, and replace damaged credit cards, with digital options streamlining the process and reducing risks of unauthorised use.
A damaged credit card can quickly become a practical problem, stopping routine payments just when a cardholder needs access most. TV9 Hindi says the safest response is to act at once: block the card, inform the issuer and request a replacement so the account remains usable and exposed to less risk.
According to Niki Sahwani, chief business officer at Instamoney, customers should notify the issuer immediately if a card is faulty or no longer works properly. That first step helps prevent misuse, and it also allows the bank to begin the replacement process without delay. Many lenders now let customers do this through a mobile app, internet banking or a helpline, rather than requiring a branch visit.
Several major card providers follow a similar approach. Chase says customers can request a replacement through its mobile app or online banking, with cards usually arriving within five to seven business days. Capital One allows replacement requests through its app or website and says eligible customers may also use virtual card options while waiting. American Express says replacement cards can be ordered online, including for additional card members, and in some cases offers free next-day delivery.
Once a replacement has been requested, customers should keep an eye on the dispatch status and make sure their registered address and contact details are correct. HSBC says damaged or lost cards should be reported immediately, and notes that it offers a temporary freeze if a card might still turn up. After the new card arrives, it should be checked, activated through the issuer’s authorised channel and protected by setting or confirming the PIN. The old card should then be cut up and destroyed securely, including the chip and card details.
