Maharashtra’s contactless fare programme hits milestone with over 1 crore NCMC registrations

EbixCash and MSRTC have surpassed a key milestone in their contactless fare scheme, with more than 1 crore NCMC registrations and 66 lakh activations, signalling a strong shift towards digital ticketing in Maharashtra’s transit system.

EbixCash and the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation have pushed their contactless fare programme past a key milestone, with more than 1 crore National Common Mobility Card registrations and nearly 66 lakh activations recorded by 12 August, according to the company. The figures suggest the state-run bus operator’s move towards digital ticketing is gaining traction among commuters who use the scheme for cashless travel.

The latest update comes after local media reported a steady rise in sign-ups in the weeks before and after the August 1 deadline, when the card became mandatory for women, senior citizens and other eligible concession passengers using MSRTC services. Mid-Day said registrations had crossed 62.86 lakh by 2 July, while about 35.52 lakh cards had been activated at that point. Hindustan Samachar also reported in June that transport minister Pratap Sarnaik had pressed officials to speed up the activation process for pending cards.

MSRTC has framed the rollout as part of its wider shift towards digital ticketing and the government’s broader “One Nation, One Card” mobility push. The card is designed to work across participating public transport systems and other eligible acceptance points, giving passengers a single payment method for travel where the infrastructure is in place.

Deepak Bhatia, business head at EbixCash, said in a statement that the programme shows the company’s focus on secure and scalable payment tools that simplify commuting. EbixCash said it provides the technology and payment infrastructure for card issuance, activation, top-ups and transaction processing, and that it intends to keep investing in the NCMC ecosystem as India expands its smart mobility network.
