Small finance banks are still offering some of the most attractive fixed deposit returns in India, with rates above 8% available in August 2026 for regular depositors, according to Business Today. The highest published rate in the article is 8.10%, offered by Suryoday Small Finance Bank on a 30-month deposit and by Utkarsh Small Finance Bank for 666 days. Jana offers 8% for three years, Shivalik offers 8% on a tenure of 23 months and one day to 27 months, and Unity offers 8% for 1 year, 4 months and 15 days.
For senior citizens, the headline rates are even stronger. Business Today says Shivalik and Unity are offering up to 8.50% on selected tenures, while Jana is offering 8.30%, Suryoday and Utkarsh are at 8.25%, and Ujjivan Small Finance Bank is offering 8.30% on a two-year deposit. Separate guides from Finuraa, ClearTax and Paisabazaar also show that small finance banks continue to dominate the top end of India’s FD market in 2026, with several banks offering rates above those at larger lenders.
The gap with the biggest banks remains wide. Business Today says State Bank of India’s top regular FD rate in its data is 6.45%, Bank of Baroda goes up to 6.75%, and HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank top out at 6.50%. That means the 8.10% rate is 1.65 percentage points higher than SBI’s best offering in the comparison. Other rate trackers cited in the related coverage also point to a broader market in which small finance banks lead the rankings, although the exact best rate can vary by tenure and depositor category.
Even so, rate alone should not decide the choice. Business Today notes that small finance banks often pay more because they need to draw in deposits, but savers should still check the bank’s financial strength, the tenure on offer, penalties for early withdrawal and whether the money may be needed soon. Deposit insurance matters too: under India’s DICGC cover, principal and interest are protected only up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, so larger sums may be safer when spread across several institutions rather than placed in one account.
