India clarifies biometric Aadhaar-based e-KYC exemption for existing LPG users amidst subsidy verification drive

The Indian government has emphasized that only unverified domestic LPG consumers need to complete biometric Aadhaar-based e-KYC, aiming to tighten subsidy delivery while assuring existing verified users their access remains unaffected.

Millions of domestic LPG users in India have been urged to complete biometric Aadhaar-based e-KYC, but official guidance indicates the requirement applies only to consumers who have not already done so. MediaNama and other outlets reported in March 2026 that the Petroleum Ministry said existing verified users do not need to repeat the process, and that refills should not be disrupted for those who have already completed authentication.

The push is aimed at tightening subsidy delivery and reducing leakage from fake or inactive connections. According to reporting by NDTV, LiveMint and others, the government wants to ensure that subsidies reach genuine household users rather than being diverted into commercial use or black-market trade. The rule covers connections supplied by Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum.

For consumers still pending verification, the process can be completed online using the oil firms’ mobile apps together with UIDAI’s Aadhaar FaceRD app, or offline at a distributor point using fingerprint or iris checks. Reports say the digital route is designed to take only a few minutes and to spare customers a trip to the agency if they have a smartphone and a mobile number linked to Aadhaar.

The more alarming claims circulating about blanket suspension of all connections are not supported by the clearer government guidance cited in the related reports. Instead, the real risk appears to be for unverified customers who have not yet finished the authentication process and could lose access to subsidies until they do. Consumers can check their status through the mylpg portal, where verified accounts should show as complete.
