India’s electronics exports have increased over elevenfold in a decade, with mobile phones leading the surge, transforming the country into a major global electronics manufacturing hub and exporter.
India’s electronics exports have climbed more than 11-fold in a decade, reaching ₹4.24 lakh crore in FY2025-26, according to reporting based on government figures. The rise has turned electronic goods into the country’s third-largest export category and marked one of the clearest signs yet that India is moving from an import-dependent market to a more export-oriented manufacturing base.
Mobile phones have been the biggest force behind that shift. The Times of India and The Economic Times reported that mobile phone exports rose 165-fold from about ₹1,500 crore in FY2014-15 to roughly ₹2.59 lakh crore in FY2025-26, making handsets India’s largest export item. That growth has also helped establish India as the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.
Officials and industry reports attribute much of the momentum to policy support, including the production-linked incentive scheme, the electronics components manufacturing scheme, the India Semiconductor Mission and electronics manufacturing clusters. Business Standard reported earlier this year that electronics exports had crossed ₹4 lakh crore in 2025, while also noting expectations of further gains as four semiconductor plants come on stream.
The expansion has not been limited to trade. Government data cited in the reports puts total electronics production at ₹6.27 lakh crore, up sharply from ₹18,000 crore in FY2014-15, while the sector has created about 12 lakh jobs. Women make up nearly 30% of the broader electronics manufacturing workforce, and almost 70% of workers in mobile phone production, underscoring the sector’s growing role in formal employment. India’s digital economy now accounts for up to 14% of GDP, internet subscriptions have more than quadrupled since 2014, and 5G coverage has expanded to 99.9% of districts, helping to reinforce the scale of the country’s technology build-out.
