Most Indian bank branches will operate normally during August 17 to 23, 2026, despite a brief few days of closures due to regional and national festivals, with digital banking remaining accessible throughout.
Banks in India are set for a short run of closures in the week of August 17 to August 23, 2026, although most branches will operate normally on four of those days. Zee Business says the main interruption for branch visitors will fall on August 19, when banks in Agartala will be shut for the birthday of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. Nationally, branches will also be closed on August 22, the fourth Saturday of the month, and on Sunday, August 23.
That means customers in most locations can still handle branch work on Monday, August 17; Tuesday, August 18; Thursday, August 20; and Friday, August 21. For people in Agartala, the key date to avoid is August 19, when local bank offices will not open for routine services.
The broader August holiday calendar shows this is part of a month that also includes several regional and national observances. Moneycontrol, Livemint, Times of India and other holiday trackers list Independence Day, Raksha Bandhan, Onam and Eid-e-Milad among the closures that affect different states on different dates. Those calendars also repeat the RBI rule that banks are closed every Sunday, as well as on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.
Even when branches are shut, digital banking is expected to remain available. The reports say internet banking, mobile banking, UPI, ATM services and other core online channels should continue to function, allowing customers to move money, pay bills and carry out routine transactions without waiting for branch reopening. As always, branch closures can vary by location, so customers with time-sensitive work are being advised to plan ahead.
