Ladakh residents can now verify their inclusion in the expanded Ayushman Bharat scheme via online portal

Residents of Ladakh can access and verify their eligibility for the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana through an official portal, facilitating cashless hospital care amid ongoing healthcare expansions and regional challenges.

Residents of Ladakh can check whether they are listed in the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana beneficiary database through the official portal, which allows users to log in with a mobile number, verify their details and review card status. The scheme, known locally as AB-PMJAY Ladakh, is run through the Union Territory’s State Health Agency and provides cashless cover for eligible secondary and tertiary hospital care.

The broader scheme has expanded in recent years. In September 2024, the Union government approved free health cover for all Indians aged 70 and above, irrespective of income, with a separate card for eligible senior citizens and benefits of up to ₹5 lakh a year on a family basis. The government has also extended coverage to ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, Anganwadi helpers and their families, a change that applies in Ladakh as well.

Eligibility in Ladakh is shaped by both national and local arrangements. The original PM-JAY roll was built from the Socio-Economic and Caste Census of 2011, but the Ladakh administration says families left out of that database were later brought under the Union Territory’s Universal Health Coverage Scheme. That means AB-PMJAY and the local scheme are distinct, even though both sit within the wider public health safety net.

Beneficiaries can obtain an Ayushman card online through the official portal or app, at an empanelled hospital, through a Common Service Centre or via local enrolment drives. The usual documents include Aadhaar for identity checks, family details such as a ration card where relevant, and a mobile number for one-time password verification. According to the official beneficiary portal, users can also complete verification and access card-related services through the mobile login system.

Healthcare access in Ladakh is still constrained by geography and the limited number of tertiary facilities, so many patients are referred to Srinagar, Jammu, Chandigarh or Delhi. Public hospitals such as SNM Hospital in Leh and district hospital Kargil are among the facilities where AB-PMJAY care is delivered locally, while the scheme’s portability allows treatment at empanelled hospitals elsewhere in India. The AB-PMJAY dashboard shows that around 200,000 Ayushman cards have been generated in Ladakh, underlining the scale of the scheme’s reach in the Union Territory.

Even so, the scheme is not always enough on its own. It offers defined package rates and a ₹5 lakh annual family limit, but it does not provide the added features often found in private health insurance, such as restoration benefits or broader flexibility on cover levels. For households that can afford it, private insurance may still serve as a useful second layer of protection, particularly as medical costs continue to rise.
