Svatantra Microfin, led by Ananya Birla, files for a ₹3,000 crore IPO as it accelerates growth through geographic diversification, business restructuring, and expansion into secured lending sectors, aiming to strengthen its capital base and deepen its national reach.
Svatantra Microfin, the microfinance lender led by Ananya Birla, has filed papers with India’s markets regulator for a ₹3,000 crore initial public offering, marking a significant step in its push to expand lending capacity and deepen its national footprint. The proposed issue is split evenly between a fresh sale of shares worth ₹1,500 crore and an equal-sized offer for sale, with proceeds from the new shares intended to strengthen the company’s Tier-I capital base and support further growth.
The filing comes as the lender has scaled up sharply in recent years. Business Standard reported that Svatantra Microfin’s assets under management in microfinance rose to ₹21,093.22 crore as of March 31, 2026, from ₹14,437.87 crore two years earlier, lifting its share of India’s total microfinance assets under management from 3.26% to 6.37%. It was also the largest non-banking finance company-microfinance institution in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, underlining how its business has broadened beyond its original strongholds.
The company has also sought to reduce concentration risk through geographic diversification, a point it highlighted in its filing. According to Business Standard, Svatantra Microfin reported the lowest gross Stage 3 ratio among peer MFIs in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026, at 2.24% and 1.19% respectively. The group’s operations now extend beyond microfinance into secured lending, including affordable housing finance and loans against property through its subsidiary, Svatantra Micro Housing Finance Corporation.
Recent restructuring has further reshaped the business. The Economic Times reported that the amalgamation of Chaitanya India Fin Credit with Svatantra Microfin took effect on March 21, 2026, after approvals from the National Company Law Tribunal and regulators including the Reserve Bank of India and the Competition Commission of India. The combined entity now has about 2,200 branches across 20 states, roughly 25,000 employees and around 5 million customers, according to that report, while Business Standard said Svatantra Microfin had 4.27 million active microfinance borrowers, 2,123 branches and operations across 394 districts as of March 31, 2026. Axis Capital, Avendus Capital, IIFL Capital Services, Kotak Mahindra Capital Company and SBI Capital Markets are the book-running lead managers to the issue.
