India links semiconductor ambition with nuclear power expansion in push for industrial growth

India has unveiled a comprehensive industrial strategy, combining a ₹1.275 trillion semiconductor development programme with opening its nuclear sector to private investment, signalling a coordinated drive towards energy self-sufficiency and technological autonomy by 2047.

India has moved to link two of its biggest industrial ambitions: building a domestic semiconductor base and expanding nuclear power to keep it running. In mid-July, the Union Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0, a ₹1.275 trillion programme designed to support chip design, fabrication, advanced packaging, materials, equipment, research and training, according to government and industry summaries.

The scale of the plan reflects how far India still has to go in semiconductors. Reports from India Briefing, the India Brand Equity Foundation and Business Standard say the new package builds on the earlier semiconductor mission and is meant to widen support beyond chip plants alone, with the aim of making India more attractive to manufacturers, suppliers and investors across the full supply chain.

At the same time, India is opening its nuclear sector to private capital for the first time, a shift that underscores how closely energy policy is tied to industrial policy. The government sees nuclear power as a long-term answer to the massive, steady electricity demands of advanced chip fabs, while also exploring small reactors that could be used for industrial sites, including semiconductor facilities. That approach comes as India already operates 24 reactors and has more under construction, with officials setting ambitious capacity targets for the coming decades.

The strategy is part of the broader Viksit Bharat push to turn India into a developed economy by 2047. Reuters has previously reported that the country’s semiconductor push is gathering pace across several states, while fresh investment announcements in nuclear power suggest companies are preparing for a new market in baseload energy. Taken together, the two programmes point to a more coordinated industrial model: build the chips, then build the power system to sustain them.
