Akkineni Nagarjuna urges caution as digital arrest scams prompt global security alert

Bollywood and Tollywood star Akkineni Nagarjuna reveals his family’s narrow escape from cyber fraud, highlighting the rising threat of digital arrest scams worldwide and urging increased vigilance.

Akkineni Nagarjuna has said his family has had a close encounter with cyber fraud, prompting him to tighten his own online habits as concerns grow over so-called digital arrest scams. The actor said the experience made clear that such schemes can hit anyone, regardless of how careful or well informed they may be.

According to Nagarjuna, one of the simplest safeguards he now follows is changing passwords every month and being more guarded about what he shares online. His comments reflect a broader pattern seen by law enforcement, which says criminals are increasingly relying on fear, impersonation and psychological pressure rather than technical hacking to trick victims into compliance.

In India, digital arrest scams typically involve fraudsters posing as police officers, regulators or other officials and using video calls, fake paperwork and official-looking identities to create panic. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal has issued advice on the threat, while cyber-safety guidance also urges people not to disclose one-time passwords, PINs, passwords or banking details over calls or messages, and to verify anyone claiming to represent an authority.

The concern is not confined to India. In the United States, the FBI said in April 2026 that cyber-enabled crime cost Americans nearly $21 billion in 2025, with more than one million complaints filed and cryptocurrency-related losses topping $11 billion. The bureau said investment fraud remained the biggest driver of losses and urged people to pause and assess suspicious messages or requests before acting, a warning that echoes the basic caution Nagarjuna described.
