Citi advises caution despite gold’s rapid rally and bullish target of $4,500 in three months

Citi recommends patience amid gold’s swift surge, setting a three-month target of $4,500, while highlighting potential risks that could temper the rally by 2026.

Citi is urging investors not to get carried away by gold’s latest burst higher, even as the bank says the metal’s backdrop has improved with U.S. front-end rates falling. The bank’s latest note suggests the move has been swift enough to warrant patience, arguing that buyers may be better off waiting for a pullback or consolidation before adding exposure.

The call comes against a broader pattern of firmer gold demand, with exchange-traded fund inflows picking up since mid-July. Citi says the metal tends to do well in both bull steepening and bull flattening environments, but it still sees more attractive entry points ahead of fresh buying after the recent rally.

In the near term, Citi has set a three-month target of $4,500 an ounce and still sees $5,000 as its base case over the next six to 12 months. That outlook fits with the bank’s earlier upgrades this year, when it lifted its short-dated target on the back of Chinese buying, safe-haven demand and what it described as a rare physical deficit in the market.

Even so, Citi has also sketched out a more cautious path later in 2026. It expects some of the risks now supporting gold – including U.S.-China tensions and concern over U.S. public debt – to fade, which could take some of the shine off the metal. The bank has also warned that any shift in Federal Reserve leadership could further reduce gold’s appeal as a haven, underscoring that the rally may still be vulnerable to changing policy and geopolitical conditions.
