Indian shares decline modestly amid broad weakness and easing volatility

Indian benchmark indices closed lower on Friday, facing broad declines across sectors amid subdued market activity and reduced volatility, while key stocks and mid-cap indices also softened.

Indian shares ended lower on Friday, with the benchmark indices losing ground in a quiet session that still left both gauges above key round levels. The Sensex finished down 70.71 points at 78,009.25, while the Nifty 50 slipped 29.85 points to 24,366.00, according to Chinimandi. The move marked a modest pullback from the previous session, when the Sensex closed at 78,079.96 and the Nifty ended at 24,395.85.

The weakness was broad, with pressure concentrated in several large names. Chinimandi said TMPV, Jio Financial Services, Asian Paints, Hindalco and ONGC were among the day’s biggest losers on the Nifty, while Apollo Hospitals, Bharti Airtel, Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises and ICICI Bank gained. Sectorally, auto, energy, fast-moving consumer goods, metals, pharmaceuticals and real estate slipped between 0.5% and 1%, while consumer durables and media rose by about 1% each.

Mid-cap and small-cap stocks also finished softer, with the Nifty Midcap index down 0.5% and the small-cap gauge falling 0.6%, Chinimandi reported. Market volatility eased, with India VIX dropping 0.87% to 11.32, suggesting traders saw less immediate turbulence. The rupee was broadly unchanged, closing at 95.43 per dollar compared with 95.44 in the previous session.
