The Union territory of Puducherry has exceeded its Rs 4,000 crore export target, reaching about Rs 4,900 crore, supported by new Special Economic Zones and strengthened industry-government collaboration.
Puducherry has crossed a key export milestone, with shipments rising to about Rs 4,900 crore and moving well beyond the Rs 4,000 crore goal set out in the Union territory’s 2021 export policy, according to data from the Trade Intelligence and Analytics portal. Officials said the result reflects a steady widening of the local export base and stronger coordination across government departments and industry.
Secretary-cum-Director of Industries and Commerce A. Vikranth Raja said in a release on Friday that the policy was designed to turn Puducherry into a more innovative and globally competitive export hub. Its main aims included lifting exports from Rs 2,500 crore to Rs 4,000 crore by 2025-26, while also improving export infrastructure, broadening product lines and opening access to more overseas markets.
The achievement was reviewed at a state-level Export Promotion Committee meeting held on August 13 under Chief Secretary Sharat Chauhan, where officials assessed the territory’s performance in the sector. Raja said the figures pointed to effective implementation of the policy and the contribution of manufacturers and exporters in Puducherry.
The latest export gains come as the Union government has also stepped up industrial support for the territory. In May, the government notified two new Special Economic Zones in Puducherry to help expand manufacturing, investment and exports, including an IT and IT-enabled services zone at Thattanchavady that was described as the first SEZ in India to be developed by a municipal body. The broader policy push is expected to help Puducherry diversify its products and export destinations further, strengthening its position as a more connected trading hub.
