EPFO raises auto-settlement limit to Rs 5 lakh to expedite retirement savings access

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has increased the ceiling for auto-settled advance claims from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh, aiming to provide quicker access to funds during urgent expenses such as medical emergencies, and to streamline the process through digital enhancements.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has expanded its auto-settlement facility for advance claims, raising the ceiling from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh in a move designed to speed up access to retirement savings when members face pressing expenses. According to business reporting from Business Standard, the higher limit applies to claims for illness, education, marriage and housing, and the system is intended to reduce the need for manual verification.

For members seeking help with medical costs, the change is especially significant. The facility can now cover treatment for the employee, spouse, children and parents, giving households a faster route to funds when cash is urgently needed. Earlier coverage was narrower, but reporting from Business Standard and Financial Express shows EPFO has gradually broadened and raised the threshold for auto-settled medical advances over time.

The process is meant to be simple provided the member’s records are in order. EPFO requires completed KYC, an active universal account number, Aadhaar linked to the bank account and up-to-date PAN, bank and mobile details. Once those checks are in place, the claim can be filed through the EPFO portal under Form 31, with the reason selected, the amount entered and the one-time password submitted from the registered mobile number.

EPFO has presented the change as part of a wider push towards faster, more digital service. Business Standard reported that auto-mode claims are now being processed within 3 days, while the organisation handled a record 23.4 million advance claims through auto-settlement in the 2024-25 financial year. Outlook Money said the broader purpose is to cut manual workload and improve settlement ratios for a membership base of more than 7 crore people.
