Bengaluru's tech professionals turn to gold loans for swift liquidity amid rising costs

In Bengaluru, tech professionals increasingly favour gold loans as a quick and flexible solution to cover expenses without selling assets, prompting a surge in demand for short-term liquidity options with minimal paperwork and rapid disbursal.

For Bengaluru’s technology workforce, gold loans are increasingly being pitched as a fast way to raise money without selling assets or waiting days for approval. The appeal is straightforward: in a city where rent, deposits and living costs can strain even well-paid salaries, a pledged gold loan can provide quick liquidity for medical bills, home repairs or a short-term business need.

A gold loan is a secured loan in which jewellery, ornaments or coins are handed to the lender as collateral. The amount offered depends on the value of the gold, while the borrower keeps ownership of the asset and gets it back after repayment. HDFC Bank says lenders typically assess purity and weight before disbursing funds, and in many cases the process is completed quickly, sometimes within an hour.

Banks also promote gold loans for their lighter paperwork and flexible repayment terms. DCB Bank says these loans usually require limited documentation and can be structured with EMI payments, interest-only instalments or a bullet repayment, where the principal is repaid at the end of the tenure. ICICI Bank, meanwhile, says borrowers should also receive a Key Fact Statement before signing, reflecting a push towards clearer disclosure and more transparent lending.

The product can be especially attractive for salaried professionals expecting bonuses or ESOP payouts, because many lenders do not levy foreclosure or prepayment charges, allowing early repayment without extra cost. According to the Bengaluru-focused promotion from Bajaj Finance, pledged gold is also insured for free during the loan period, though the final loan amount depends on eligible loan-to-value limits, the gold’s karat and the pricing benchmark used by the lender.

Still, borrowers are being urged to compare rates, charges and repayment terms carefully before taking the plunge. Industry guides and lender material consistently point to the same basic trade-off: gold loans can be quick and convenient, but they make sense only if the borrower has a clear plan to repay on time and avoid risking the pledged asset.
