India's software exports reach Rs 7.73 lakh crore in FY 2025-26 amid regional shifts

India’s Software Technology Park units have posted estimated exports of Rs 7.73 lakh crore for FY 2025-26, driven by continued growth and regional diversification, despite a decline in investments and sustained contribution from key states such as Karnataka and Maharashtra.

India’s Software Technology Park units posted estimated exports of Rs 7.73 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, underscoring the continued strength of the country’s software and IT-enabled services trade, according to data shared by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The figure marks a rise of 21.56% from Rs 6.36 lakh crore in FY 2023-24 and continues a steady upward trend through FY 2024-25, when exports reached Rs 6.88 lakh crore.

The Software Technology Parks of India scheme is designed as a 100% export-oriented programme for software and IT-enabled services, and the ministry said STPI has been providing single-window clearance and statutory services under the framework. The data also showed that the number of registered STP units rose to 2,125 in FY 2025-26 from 2,059 two years earlier, even after a brief dip in FY 2024-25.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu led the country with 391 STP units each, followed by Maharashtra with 367 and Telangana with 280. In export terms, Karnataka remained the biggest contributor over the three-year period, with STP-linked exports of Rs 3,50,184.78 crore, ahead of Maharashtra at Rs 1,62,594.11 crore and Telangana at Rs 1,13,101.83 crore. The figures indicate that India’s software export base remains concentrated in a handful of technology-heavy states, even as the network of STPI-registered units widens.

Not all indicators moved in the same direction. Total investment reported by STP units declined to Rs 7,362.86 crore in FY 2025-26 from Rs 10,709.92 crore in FY 2023-24, while imports inched up to Rs 9,960.26 crore from Rs 9,947.47 crore over the same period. Separate reporting by The Times of India has also pointed to a sharp rise in software exports from STPI centres in Trichy, suggesting that smaller centres outside the main hubs are beginning to gain traction.
