India’s passenger vehicle market achieved its best July on record with sales soaring to 395,199 units, driven by favourable tax reforms, new launches, and returning consumer confidence, signalling a robust recovery in the industry.
India’s passenger vehicle market posted a strong July, with sales climbing to 395,199 units, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. The figure was up 18.2% from June and 31.2% from a year earlier, making it the industry’s best July on record and underscoring the depth of domestic demand. The rise was supported by lower goods and services tax rates and a steady stream of new model launches.
Rajesh Menon, director general of SIAM, said the sector entered the festive period with solid consumer confidence, a crucial signal for carmakers in a market where holiday-season buying often shapes the rest of the year. The July outcome also extends a run of robust sales through the spring and early summer, when Indian buyers continued to favour passenger vehicles despite wider concerns over commodity costs and geopolitical uncertainty.
The latest result follows a series of record or near-record months earlier in 2026. SIAM data showed April domestic dispatches of passenger vehicles rising 25.4% year on year to 437,312 units, while May sales reached 438,854 units, up 27.3% from the same month in 2025. In June, passenger vehicle sales still advanced 18.2% year on year to 326,068 units, helped by lower tax rates, easier financing and new launches, even as growth slowed from the previous month.
Indian Express reported in June that the market was also being lifted by first-time buyers, reviving demand for smaller cars after several years in which sport utility vehicles had dominated the conversation. That shift suggests the recovery is not limited to one vehicle category, but is being driven by a broader improvement in affordability and sentiment.
