Tata Motors may hike vehicle prices again amid rising commodity costs and EV pressure

Tata Motors is considering further price increases for its passenger vehicles as it grapples with escalating commodity prices and mounting challenges in the electric vehicle segment, with cautious pass-through to consumers.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles may lift prices again as it grapples with one of the sharpest commodity-cost squeezes in recent quarters, with managing director and chief executive Shailesh Chandra saying the pressure has already weighed on domestic margins. According to the company, higher commodity costs trimmed first-quarter domestic margins by about 4.5% of revenue, and the second quarter could prove even more difficult for the industry.

Chandra said the cost environment in the first half of the year has been unusually challenging, with the second quarter expected to show a heavier impact across the market. The company is weighing both cost reductions and further price increases, but Chandra indicated that any pass-through to buyers would be cautious and phased rather than immediate.

Tata Motors has already raised passenger vehicle prices twice this year. In April, it increased prices for internal combustion engine models, and from 1 July 2026 it lifted prices across its passenger vehicle range, including both petrol-diesel and electric models, by up to 1.5%, according to company statements reported by several business publications.

The electric vehicle business may face the greatest pressure if costs keep rising. Chandra said the impact of commodity inflation could be slightly more severe for EVs than for ICE vehicles, even as the company works on redesigning some sub-systems to cut manufacturing costs. For now, Tata Motors is trying to balance margin protection with the risk of pushing too much of the burden on to customers in a highly price-sensitive market.
