Indian shares weaken amid cautious global cues despite mixed market signals

Indian shares opened lower on Friday as benchmark indices slipped amidst mixed regional and global market signals, with domestic institutions supporting the market while foreign investors remained net sellers amid geopolitical uncertainties.

Indian shares opened lower on Friday, with benchmark indices slipping despite a steadier mood across global markets. The BSE Sensex fell 176.53 points, or 0.02%, to 77,903.43 at the start of trade, while the Nifty 50 slipped 33.95 points to 24,361.90. Broader markets were mixed, with the BSE Midcap Select Index edging higher but the BSE Smallcap Select Index weakening slightly.

Buying interest was uneven within the Sensex basket. Bajaj Finance, TCS, Titan, Eternal and Infosys were among the early gainers, while Trent, Power Grid, InterGlobe Aviation, Tata Steel and UltraTech Cement traded lower. Market breadth was positive on the NSE, with more advancing stocks than decliners, suggesting selective buying rather than a broad-based move.

Gift Nifty pointed to a subdued opening, while foreign investors remained net sellers for a second day, according to market data cited by Indian television coverage, even as domestic institutions continued to provide support. Hitesh Tailor, technical research analyst at Choice Broking, said the market backdrop remained cautiously constructive, helped by softer crude prices and firmer overseas equities, but noted that geopolitical uncertainty and recent consolidation could keep gains contained. Asian markets were largely firmer, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 rising sharply, although Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Shanghai’s main index traded lower.
