Razorpay teams up with OpenAI and NPCI to enable merchants to create ChatGPT storefronts that support seamless UPI payments, aiming to revolutionise digital customer acquisition and discovery.
Razorpay is moving to position itself inside the fast-emerging market for AI-led shopping, working with OpenAI and the National Payments Corporation of India to let merchants build storefronts that live inside ChatGPT and accept payments through India’s Unified Payments Interface. The fintech company says the system can link catalogues, support chat-based discovery and enable checkout through UPI features such as UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay, with BigBasket among the first merchants to test the experience, according to Razorpay’s announcement.
The pitch is aimed at a simple commercial problem: traditional digital customer acquisition has become more expensive, while AI assistants are starting to shape what users discover and buy. Razorpay says it is already working with about 50 brands and several e-commerce marketplaces on so-called agentic commerce experiments, and claims a Shopify merchant could be moved from a ChatGPT storefront build time of roughly 10 weeks to about 30 minutes. That claim, if borne out, would sharply reduce the technical friction for smaller merchants trying to place products in AI conversations.
Razorpay is also trying to reassure merchants and consumers that the model does not require handing payment credentials to an AI system. The company says its architecture keeps card or bank details away from the model itself and requires user consent before a payment is completed. That security angle matters because the bigger question is not whether people will ask an assistant what to buy, but whether they will trust it to finish the transaction.
The broader bet is that ChatGPT and similar tools will not replace e-commerce apps, but may become a new discovery layer that sits on top of them. According to Razorpay, the company is also providing merchants with a way to manage payments conversationally through its MCP server integration with ChatGPT, while OpenAI has been extending payments into other developer tools as well. For Razorpay, the strategic prize is less immediate revenue than a foothold in the infrastructure stack that could power shopping across multiple AI platforms if consumer trust and merchant adoption both grow.
