RBI’s redemption price boosts sovereign Gold Bond gains but tax changes complicate investor returns

Investors in the 2019-20 Series IV Sovereign Gold Bonds have seen substantial paper gains, but upcoming tax amendments and premature redemption rules introduce new considerations for overall returns.

Sovereign Gold Bond holders in the 2019-20 Series IV tranche are set for a striking paper gain, with the Reserve Bank of India fixing the premature redemption price at ₹15,173 per gram for 17 September 2026. At the original issue price of ₹3,840 a gram for online buyers, a ₹1 lakh investment would have bought about 26.04 grams and would now be worth roughly ₹3.95 lakh before interest, according to calculations based on the RBI’s redemption price and the issue terms.

That implies a capital gain of about ₹2.95 lakh, or 295.13%, over seven years. But that is only part of the story. Sovereign Gold Bonds also pay 2.5% annual interest on the initial investment, settled half-yearly. On ₹1 lakh, that works out at ₹2,500 a year, or around ₹17,500 over seven years before tax, which means the total economic return is higher than the redemption value alone suggests.

The tax treatment matters just as much as the headline gain. The Union Budget’s amendments, which take effect from 1 April 2026, narrow the capital gains exemption so that it applies only when an investor subscribed at the original issue and holds the bond until maturity. That is important because the 17 September 2026 exit is a premature redemption, not the scheduled maturity in September 2027. Investors therefore should not assume the full gain will be tax-free.

The RBI’s scheme rules allow premature redemption after the fifth year, on an interest payment date, and the redemption price is tied to the simple average of gold’s closing price over the previous three business days, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association. For Series IV investors, that has delivered a strong exit value, but the after-tax outcome will depend on each investor’s individual tax position.
